Grammar in the IELTS band descriptors
Grammatical Range and Accuracy is one of the four criteria in both Writing and Speaking. Examiners look at two things: range — whether you use a mix of simple and complex sentences — and accuracy — how many sentences are free of errors. At Band 6 errors are frequent but rarely block meaning; at Band 7 most sentences are error-free; at Band 8 errors are rare.
The most common IELTS grammar mistakes
- Articles: “the technology” when you mean technology in general, or a missing “a” before a singular countable noun.
- Subject–verb agreement: “many people thinks” instead of “many people think”.
- Uncountable nouns: “informations”, “advices” and “researches” have no plural.
- Tenses in Task 1: describe past data in the past simple and forecasts with “is expected to” or “will”.
- Comparatives: “more easier” should be “easier”.
How to use the checker well
Write your answer first under timed conditions, then check it. Read each explanation rather than copying the corrected text: noticing the pattern behind your mistakes is what stops you repeating them in the exam. When the grammar is clean, try the vocabulary booster to work on Lexical Resource.
