Enter a sentence or an essay question to get three paraphrases in a formal register, each labelled with the technique it uses — synonyms, word forms, passive voice or a new sentence structure.

Five paraphrasing techniques

TechniqueExample
Synonymsspend more money on → invest more heavily in
Word formpeople are living longer → life expectancy is increasing
Active ↔ passivethe government should fund → should be funded by the state
Nominalisationprices rose sharply → there was a sharp rise in prices
Clause orderAlthough X, Y → Y, even though X

Where to use paraphrasing

  • Task 2 introductions: rewrite the question in your own words, then add your thesis.
  • Task 1 overviews: describe the chart’s title without copying it.
  • Reading and Listening: answers are usually paraphrased versions of the question, so practising makes them easier to spot.

Common mistakes

Swapping every word for a rare synonym makes sentences unnatural and can change the meaning. Combine two techniques at most, keep key topic words that have no real synonym (for example “university” or “the internet”), and check the result still means exactly the same thing. Frequently asked questions

Why does paraphrasing matter in IELTS?

Words copied from the question are not counted in Writing, and the Reading and Listening tests reward you for recognising the same idea in different words. Paraphrasing well also shows range in Lexical Resource and grammar.

Can I paste the whole Task 2 question?

Yes — paste the question (up to 60 words) and use one of the versions as the first sentence of your introduction.

Should I memorise the paraphrases?

No. Use them to learn the techniques, then practise producing your own. Memorised phrases often sound unnatural and examiners notice them.

Is it free?

Yes — up to 5 uses a day across our free AI tools, with no sign-up.

Is the meaning kept exactly the same?

That's the aim of every version. Always reread a paraphrase to make sure it still says what you mean, especially words like 'some', 'most' and 'always'.
